For employers

Transactional. An agency that has decided to hire and wants to know how to do it well.

Decide what you are hiring for

Chatter roles differ more than the job title suggests. A chatter covering an overnight shift on a large account is doing a different job from one handling a single creator's inbox during business hours. Write the posting for the actual shift, the actual volume, and the actual sales expectation, because a mismatch here is the most common reason a hire does not last.

Write a posting that filters

The strongest postings are specific about the unglamorous parts: hours, timezone, pay structure and what the commission is a percentage of. Being vague widens the applicant pool and narrows the useful part of it.

  • Name the shift and the timezone.
  • State the pay structure honestly, including the commission basis.
  • List the software the role uses, so candidates can be filtered on it.
  • Add screening questions that a generic applicant cannot answer.

Test before you interview

Written English and typing speed are the two things you cannot assess from a CV and cannot afford to be wrong about. Attaching a test to the job means every applicant who reaches you has been measured the same way, and it removes the round of interviews that exist only to establish whether someone can write.

For chat roles specifically, a live chat test puts a candidate in a real conversation against a scenario and returns the full transcript. Reading how someone actually handles a conversation tells you more than any answer to how would you handle a conversation.

Onboard properly or lose the hire

The first two weeks decide most chatter hires. Give them the account context, the tone the creator wants, the sales expectations, and someone to ask. A capable chatter dropped into an inbox with no context will underperform and it will look like a bad hire.

Common questions

How many applicants should I expect?

Enough that filtering matters more than sourcing. Screening questions and required tests are what turn a large pile into a shortlist you can actually read.

Should I hire on experience or on testing?

Test first. Experience in this industry is hard to verify and easy to overstate, while a typing result and a chat transcript are evidence you can read yourself.

What is a realistic pay structure?

A base rate plus commission is the most common, and commission only is widespread. Whichever you choose, state what the percentage is calculated on. Candidates discount vague commission offers.
