What does a social media manager actually do?
A social media manager in this industry runs the free-platform side of a creator's business. Reddit, TikTok, X, Instagram and increasingly Threads are where subscribers are found, and your job is to turn attention on those platforms into paying subscribers on the creator's paid account.
Day to day that means planning and scheduling posts, writing captions and hooks, finding and working the subreddits or hashtags that convert, and reading the numbers to see which content is actually driving clicks rather than just likes. Most agencies expect you to own the whole loop from idea to posted content to measured result.
The work is judged on traffic, not on follower count. A manager who grows an account to a hundred thousand followers that never click through is worth less than one who runs a smaller account that converts, and good agencies will ask you about that distinction in the interview.

Content scheduling at volume
Keeping several accounts posting consistently without the quality dropping on the fifth post of the day.
Staying inside platform rules
Adult-adjacent promotion gets accounts banned. Knowing where each platform's line sits protects the whole funnel.
Working from a brief
Holding a creator's persona and boundaries when you are the one writing in their voice in public.

Reddit and TikTok drive the most traffic for most agencies, with X and Instagram used more for retention and presence. Many postings name the platform explicitly, so read the requirement before applying.
There is heavy overlap. Marketing VA tends to mean executing someone else's plan across several tasks, while social media manager tends to mean owning the growth of specific platforms. Titles vary by agency, so read what the posting actually asks you to do.
