What does a virtual assistant actually do?
A virtual assistant in this industry is the operational backbone. You keep content organised and named so chatters can find it, manage calendars and posting schedules, handle inbound admin, track spend and payouts, and pick up the tasks that would otherwise land on a manager who should be doing something else.
The exact brief varies more than any other role here. Some VA postings are almost entirely content management, others are closer to an executive assistant for a single creator, and others are account management with a VA title. Read what the posting actually lists rather than the job title.
It is also the most common way into the industry. A VA who learns the operation well tends to move into account management, chatting-team leadership or marketing within a year, because they have seen how all of it fits together.
What do you need to get hired as a virtual assistant?

Organisation under volume
Content libraries run to thousands of files. A naming system that survives contact with a busy week is a real skill.
Written communication
Most of the job is asynchronous. Being clear in writing the first time saves everyone a call.
Tooling
Google Workspace, Notion or Airtable, a scheduler, and whatever the agency uses for content storage. Being quick to learn a new tool matters more than knowing a specific one.
Discretion
You will handle unreleased content, real names and financial detail. Confidentiality is the baseline expectation.
Taking initiative
The difference between a good VA and an average one is noticing the thing nobody asked you to do yet.
Time-zone flexibility
Not usually shift work, but overlapping with the team for a few hours is normally expected.

Google Workspace is close to universal. Beyond that, Notion or Airtable for tracking, a scheduling tool, and cloud storage. Most agencies will train you on their specific stack, so do not rule yourself out for missing one.
